In the Flag of Venezuela, yellow symbolizes the richness found in the Venezuelan territory, blue symbolizes the sea that separates Venezuela from Spain and red represents the blood shed by those who fought for independence. In the center of the flag, in one blue stripe figure a seven stars arc (today are eight stars) representing the seven provinces that signed the Independence Act in 1811.
In 2006 the Venezuelan government declared the addition of one more star in the blue stripe. The eighth star was added in honor of Simon Bolivar, the independence hero, who in 1817 had submitted a proposal to recognize the contribution of an eighth province in the struggle for the country’s independence.
