The Flag of New Zealand has the same colors of the UK flag, blue, red and white, as well as the reproduction of this flag in its upper left corner, in reference to the British colonization. In addition, it features four red stars with white borders, representing the Southern Cross constellation which can only be seen in the southern sky, where the country is located. The flag has never been changed since the country became independent from the UK in 1931.
Curiosities
In 2016, a votation for choosing a new flag was carried out. As finalists were two flags: the current and the finalist, chosen from thousands of proposals submitted to the competition. This has the characteristic plant of the country, fern, keeping the blue background and the four stars. But at the end of the referendum, 56.6% of voters decided against the change.
