The Flag of Kenya is based on the black, red and green flag of Kenya African National Union (KANU), the political party that fought for freedom and independence of Kenya. After independence, white stripes have been included to symbolize peace and unity. The central symbol, a shield crossed by two spears, represents the culture of the Maasai warrior people, ethnic group with strong presence in the country, and symbolizes the defense of freedom. The black in the flag symbolizes the people of the Republic of Kenya, red the blood shed in the struggle for freedom and the green means the country’s landscape and natural wealth.
