The Flag of Jamaica was adopted on the country’s independence from British rule. The design emerged from those sent by the public in a national competition. The original design had horizontal stripes that left very similar to the flag of Tanganyika and therefore has changed. The current design refers to the Scottish and Irish roots of much of the population, while the black, green and yellow gold are African historical colors representing the mainly black population of the country. Also carry the following meanings:

Green: represents hope for the future and agricultural wealth.

Black: symbolizes strength and creativity of the Jamaican people.

Yellow Gold: is the sunlight and the natural riches of the country.
